Parker Trial testimony about to begin

Mangum, OK – MANGUM, Okla. (AP) Opening statements have been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday in the trial of a former prison warden's wife who allegedly fell in love with an inmate and aided in his escape.

Defense lawyer Garvin Isaacs said Wednesday that opening statements were set as attorneys in Bobbi Parker's case moved closer to seating a 12-member jury. Twenty-two prospective jurors have been selected, and lawyers will use challenges to choose the final 12-member panel.

Bulger's Apartment Hot Property

Los Angeles, CA – LOS ANGELES (AP) The simple Southern California apartment where James "Whitey" Bulger, suspected in 19 murders, including the killing of Tulsa businessman Roger Wheeler, hid from the FBI for more than a decade could soon be one of the hotter properties in Santa Monica's rental market.

The door to unit 303 remains sealed with police tape as FBI agents continue to pick the place apart, but a line of prospective tenants is already jostling to get a look inside.

There's an excessive heat warning in effect for the Tulsa area through tomorrow. People are urged to take precautions when out and about in the heat. Tips from the national weather service include take frequent rest breaks in shaded areas, drink plenty of water, and wear light, loose fitting clothing. You are also urged to take care of pets, especially those that are used to being inside most of the time.

Cherokee Chief Recount

Tahlequah, OK – TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) A recount today could determine the winner of a disputed election for principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. More than 15,000 people cast ballots in Saturday's election. Three-term incumbent Chad Smith was declared the winner by a seven-vote margin.

N-R-A Lobbyist in trouble

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) The Oklahoma Ethics Commission is sending a letter of public reprimand to a lobbyist who represents the National Rifle Association. The state says Ashley Varner violated ethics rules by exceeding the $100 annual limit on lobbyist giving to lawmakers.

Two killed in crash with ambulance

Braggs, OK – BRAGGS, Okla. (AP) Authorities have released the identities of two people from Muskogee who died yesterday after their car crashed into an ambulance. Six-year-old old Holden Collins and 32-year-old Carrie Cash were killed in the crash near Braggs.

Excessive Heat Watch

Tulsa, OK – Much of Northeast Oklahoma is under an excessive heat watch today, tomorrow, and Friday.
The watch includes Tulsa, Creek, Okmulgee, Wagoner, Washington, Osage, Pawnee, and other Northeast Oklahoma counties.
Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 103 degrees tomorrow and Friday. Heat index values could reach 110 degrees or more.
