Fire Guts Old Turley Church

Smoke and debris is all that is left of the old Pentecostal church in Turley.

Turley, OK – The state Fire Marshal's office is being called in to help the Turley Fire Department determine the cause of an overnight blaze.

The fire gutted the abandoned Pentecostal Church near 60th Street and the Osage Trail. The church had been there since the 1940s. It appears the blaze started in the parsonage and the cause looks suspicious.

It is not known if it is related to a string of arson fires in the area in the past few weeks.

Bulger Victims Speak Out

BOSTON (AP) People who say they're victims of former Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger will be allowed to speak at a bail hearing for Bulger's longtime girlfriend.

Catherine Greig's (GREHGS) attorney had opposed allowing the statements by family members of people Bulger is accused of killing.

The judge said Wednesday that four people will be allowed to speak.

Tulsa, OK – Former Skiatook Superintendent Gary Johnson enters a guilty plea in Tulsa District Court. He was indicted by a Tulsa County Grand Jury last year for embezzlement and bribery. The grand jury indictments were replaced with local charges filed this morning by Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris.

Oklahoma City, OK – Ex-Okla. senator takes bribery case to Sup. Ct.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) An attorney for a former state senator charged with bribery says a recent appellate court ruling that allowed the case to continue is wrong.

Defense attorney Robert McCampbell urged a state Supreme Court referee Tuesday to recommend that the high court send the case against former Sen. Debbe Leftwich of Oklahoma City back to the state Court of Criminal Appeals for a hearing.

The appeals court has refused to dismiss the charge against Leftwich.

Heat Relief Won't Last Long

Oklahoma City, OK – Thunderstorms provide some heat relief for Okla.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Severe thunderstorms rumbled across Oklahoma, dropping much-needed rain on areas that have endured triple-digit heat for days.

Strong storms packing heavy rain, hail and wind pounded the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and other areas Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts between 59 mph and 72 mph near Will Rogers World Airport in southwest Oklahoma City. Damage to power lines also was reported in Midwest City.

Tahlequah, OK – Cherokee court orders manual recount of ballots

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The Cherokee Nation's Supreme Court has ordered a manual hand recount of ballots in a disputed June 25 election for chief of the 300,000-citizen tribe.

The court announced Tuesday afternoon that the recount would begin Saturday morning at the nation's election commission office.
