Luper Funeral

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla civil rights leader remembered as trailblazer

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Civil rights activist Clara Luper has been remembered as a champion of racial equality whose peaceful sit-in demonstrations opened doors for black Americans.

Luper was eulogized yesterday at a funeral attended by about 2,000 in Oklahoma City. She died June 8 at the age of 88.

Gov. Mary Fallin called Luper a national leader who was convinced that racial segregation was wrong.

Henryetta, OK – Seventh person dies in Oklahoma turnpike wreck

HENRYETTA, Okla. (AP) A head-on collision that killed six people in eastern Oklahoma earlier this month has claimed another life.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Jorge Salas Jr. died June 11 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.

Salas was riding in a vehicle driven by his father, Jorge Salas Sr., June 4 when the vehicle collided with another vehicle that was pulling a travel trailer on the Indian Nation Turnpike near Henryetta.

State treasurer fires employee under investigation

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) State Treasurer Ken Miller has fired his office's internal auditor.

Miller spokesman Tim Allen says LaTisha Reid was dismissed yesterday. She had been with the treasurer's office for about six years.

Allen says he doesn't know why Reid was told she was being dismissed.

Fire Fighters Accused of Looting

Barter Springs, KS – 3 Baxter Springs firefighters fired in looting

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) Baxter Springs Mayor Jenifer Bingham says three of the city's firefighters have been fired and the chief put on administrative leave over alleged looting in Joplin the night of the May 22 tornado.

Tulsa, OK – A new feud at Tulsa city Hall. The City Council voted seven-to-two to set the wheels in motion for next fall's municipal election. In doing so, the council would not use the new district boundaries and the Tulsa County Election Board would not be involved in the process.

Assistant City Attorney Patrick Boulden advised the council against the measure from Councilman John Eagleton.

The Council approved the resolution just the same. Councilors Chris Trail and G.T. Bynum voted against it.

Guilty Plea in Leonard Murder

Leonard, OK – Oklahoman pleads guilty in Tulsa Co shooting death

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A Hominy resident has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man in Indian Country.

Steven Keeling entered the plea Thursday in U.S. District Court in Tulsa as part of an agreement with federal prosecutors.

Authorities say Keeling fatally shot Edward Brown Jan. 17 at Brown's home on a restricted Indian allotment in Leonard, south of Tulsa. Brown was a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation.

Child's Death Investigation

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. DHS workers suspended after girl's death

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Department of Human Services has suspended with pay four child welfare workers pending an investigation into the beating death of a 5-year-old girl.

Serenity Anne Deal died of head injuries less than a month after she began living with her father. Child welfare workers recommended the girl live with the father after she was taken away from her mother, who is charged with sexually assaulting a child.
