Charges Filed in Turnpike Wreck

Miami, OK – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) An Ottawa County prosecutor has filed 10 counts of negligent homicide against the tractor-trailer driver who triggered a deadly pile-up on the Will Rogers Turnpike. Donald Creed was behind the wheel of a rig that plowed into a line of stopped cars June 26. Ten people were killed.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A national nonprofit group gives Oklahoma a grade of "C'' for the financial security of families in the state.

The Corporation for Enterprise Development in Washington says Oklahoma performs well in housing measures. But it is falling behind in financial assets and health care.

Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Sports Commission and the University of Tulsa today announced Tulsa's selection to host a 2011 NCAA First-Second Round Division I Men's Basketball tournament at the BOK Center.

The Tulsa Sports Commission and host partner, the University of Tulsa, submitted a bid in May and hosted a site visit in August. In a news release from the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, the current chair, Dan Guerrero, director of athletics at UCLA, estimated approximately 70 cities submitted bids.

TFD/THD Administer Flu Shots

Tulsa, OK – City employees are rubbing their arms today. They got seasonal flu shots today from the Tulsa Fire Department.

Michael Baker is the acting chief for emergency medical services for the Fire Department. He says when the H-1-N-1 flu shots become available the department will help administer shots to the public.

The Tulsa Fire Department is partnering with the Tulsa Health Department.

Oklahoma City, OK – Painkiller use up in state

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Drug enforcement officials in Oklahoma say pain pills are moving past marijuana as a "gateway" drug for young people.

The state has two regions Oklahoma and Tulsa counties among the top 15 areas of greatest prescription misuse.

The Oklahoma Prescription Monitoring Program says data shows that supplies of prescription pain medication in Oklahoma more than doubled over a four-year period ending in 2006.

Nornan, OK – No. 12 Sooners beat Tulsa 45-0 for second shutout

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) No. 12 Oklahoma recorded its second straight shutout, beating Tulsa 45-0 Saturday for its 26th straight home victory.

The Sooners (2-1) broke the school record for consecutive wins on Owen Field by holding opponents scoreless in back-to-back games for the first time since 1987.

Budget Shortfall Hits Prisons

Oklahoma City, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) The Oklahoma Department of Corrections director says the budget deficit for his agency is trending toward $7 million.

Justin Jones said Friday the deficit would have occurred regardless of mandatory 5 percent agency cuts ordered for August and September after state revenues came in lower than anticipated.

He says if the budget cuts continue, the agency will have to ask its contractors to reduce their per diem rates for housing state inmates.
