Seasonal Vaccine Shortage

Tulsa, OK – Seasonal flu vaccine starting to run out in Okla.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Several medical groups are reporting that they're already running out of vaccine against the seasonal flu.

State Health Department immunization chief Don Blose says demand for seasonal flu vaccine seems unusually high. Blose says the problem is caused by vaccine manufacturers trying distribute both the seasonal flu vaccine and the swine flu or H1N1 virus vaccine.

Pontiac, MI – PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) The former home of the Detroit Lions will be sold at auction to the highest bidder regardless of the price.

Pontiac Emergency Financial Manager Fred Leeb tells the Detroit Free Press the suburban Detroit city is "excited about the upcoming sale of the Silverdome."

The city spends about $1.5 million annually to maintain the empty structure, which stands on 127 acres.

Limestone Flu Vaccinations

Tulsa, OK – The first H-1-N-1 vaccinations in Tulsa County took place today at the Limestone school at Sand Springs.
Principal Kristin Arnold says the students were relieved that they got the nasal spray version of the vaccine and NOT a shot.

About 120-students and staff took part. Some parents opted their children out of the program.

Domestic Violence and Insurance

Tulsa, Ok – Sen. Jim Wilson said he will introduce legislation for the upcoming session to prohibit health insurance companies from classifying domestic violence as a pre-existing condition. Wilson, a Democrat from Tahlequah, began working on the measure after recent reports stating Oklahoma was one of only eight states that allowed insurance companies to deny claims based on the pre-existing condition of domestic violence.

Poultry Lawsuit

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) Eleven Arkansas poultry companies are accusing Oklahoma of foul play, saying the state is trying to introduce new research done by one of its expert witnesses.

The companies said Thursday that expert scientist J. Berton Fisher had a May 2008 deadline to submit a report of his findings, but went back months after to reevaluate some sampling locations to come up with a "new analysis."

City Furloughs

City Hall will be closed Monday as a furlough day for city workers.

Tulsa, OK – City of Tulsa offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, for a furlough day due to budget reductions in Fiscal Year 2010, which began in July 2009. Public safety and mission critical operations, however, will operate as normal.

Trash and curbside recycling services will operate as usual on Monday. The City of Tulsa greenwaste site, 10401 East 56th Street North, also will be open as usual on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
