Zoo Fined

Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Zoo gets slapped with a five thousand dollar fine from the Department of Agriculture. This follows the death of a giraffe at the zoo in January. Tests show the animal died of hypothermia.

The zoo was cited for not keeping the giraffe warm, inadequate authority given to the zoo vet and the poor condition of the giraffe barn.

The USDA has released their findings after investigating a giraffe death due to hypothermia at the Tulsa Zoo earlier this year.

Grand Jurors are being tabbed to hear testimony about the Skiatook Schools. Patrons sought the grand jury investigation after an auditor's report said three-quarters of a million dollars was wasted on over priced supplies.

Jury selection started today in Judge Tom Thornbrugh's court room.

I-44 Reopened

Tulsa, OK – I-44 reopened between Lewis and Peoria.
All lanes of east and westbound I-44 have been reopened between Lewis Ave. and Peoria Ave. where ODOT crews worked throughout the night to repair a sink hole found in the right lane and shoulder of westbound I-44.

TU Grad/Golden Girl Actress Dies

New York City, NY – 'Golden Girl' Rue McClanahan dies

NEW YORK (AP) Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 76.

Her manager Barbara Lawrence said McClanahan died Thursday at 1 a.m. of a stroke.

She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on "aging gracefully." In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A Democratic state senator from Tahlequah says he plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Dan Boren in the primary race for Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District.

State Sen. Jim Wilson confirmed Wednesday he is completing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to seek the post.

Unemployment Figures

Tulsa, OK – SE Okla. counties top unemployment rate

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Southeast Oklahoma once again has the highest rates of unemployment in the state, but for the first time since December 2008, the jobless rate of all Oklahoma counties dipped below 10 percent last month.

According to statistics released Wednesday by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, Hughes, Latimer and McCurtain counties shared the state's highest jobless rate at 9.9 percent.

All three counties were above 10 percent in March.

Update on I-44

Tulsa, OK – Sinkhole closes down I-44 in south Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (AP) If you normally use Interstate 44 in south Tulsa to get from one place to another, you'd better figure out a different way to travel Thursday morning.

Police are diverting traffic from I-44 after a sinkhole opened up that eventually reached across both eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic. Authorities say the hole first opened up about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and steadily expanded.
