Food for Thought on StudioTulsa

Public Radio 89.5 HD1 – We've got a pair of great "thematic" weeks of programming lined up for StudioTulsa during the month of August. These two theme-centered weeks will consist of encore presentations of past programs that we're especially proud of.

Science Week begins on Monday the 9th, and Education Week will begin on Monday the 16th.

Education and Economy in North Tulsa

Tulsa, Okla. – North Tulsa has long borne the stigma of being one of Tulsa's most underdeveloped areas. The North Tulsa Economic Development Initiative, established three years ago, seeks to change both that stigma and the underlying problems in the area that contribute to its bad reputation.

Medicare Fraud Case

Oklahoma City, OK – Court ref hears arguments on Medicaid funding bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) An attorney for Oklahoma's Insurance Department says a law to raise money for the Medicaid program is unconstitutional and a lawsuit against it should be considered by the state Supreme Court.

Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland has sued to overturn the law that imposes a 1 percent fee on paid insurance claims.

Muskogee Mall Shooting Update

Muskogee, OK – Teen says friend fired shots in Okla mall shooting

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) A 17-year-old boy says his friend fired shots at a Muskogee mall, killing another 17-year-old and wounding five others.

Martin Miller alleged Dondray Fowler was the shooter during testimony Wednesday at a preliminary hearing to determine whether Fowler should stand trial for the April 10 death of Jerrod Reed at Arrowhead Mall.

Sentence in Turnpike Deaths

Miami, OK – Missouri man serving sentence for turnpike deaths

MIAMI, Okla. (AP) A Missouri man has begun serving a 30-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to negligent homicide in a turnpike accident that killed 10 people.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's office says Donald Creed, of Willard, Mo., surrendered on Monday, the day he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Pauls Valley, OK – Okla ME rules death of interim police a suicide

PAULS VALLEY, Okla. (AP) The state Medical Examiner's office has ruled that the death of the interim police chief of Pauls Valley was a suicide.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday an autopsy found that 42-year-old Scott Robbins died of a penetrating gunshot wound to the head.

OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said on Tuesday that a family member found Robbins' body at his home and called 911 about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Grand Jury Indictments

Tulsa, OK –
Thomas Scott Woodward, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma,
announces the results of the August 2010 Federal Grand Jury.
The following named individuals have been charged with a federal crime or crimes by the
return of an indictment by the Grand Jury. The return of an indictment is a method of
informing the defendant of alleged violations which must be proven in a court of law beyond
a reasonable doubt to overcome the defendant's presumption of innocence.
